SEC1 flood barrier test, Sunday, October 19
On Sunday, October 19, from 6:00 to 10:00 in the morning, we will close all seven gates in the barrier around SEC1 for its annual test. The south entrance will be closed during the test; the road stays open.
Generator tests move to Tuesday mornings
From October, monthly generator tests at SEC1 will run on the second Tuesday of each month between 10:00 and 11:00, on half the sets at a time. Our news item explains what else is changing and why.
About yesterday’s smoke and generator noise at SEC1
On the afternoon of June 24, during the power cut, one of our generators caught fire. The smoke many of you saw came from it. Our engineers put the fire out within minutes and the fire department confirmed it was out; no one was hurt. Our generators ran for four and a half hours that afternoon, much longer than a test, in the worst heat of the year. We know what that was like downwind, and we are sorry. We will write again about what we are changing.
New flood barrier: acceptance test on Sunday, May 12
The contractor building our new flood barrier will test it on Sunday, May 12, from 5:00 in the morning until about 1:00 in the afternoon, including filling the space in front of two gates with water from a hydrant. The road will stay open.
03 Diesel fumes
Diesel fumes: what we heard and what we changed
In the summer of 2024, and much more in 2025, neighbors west of SEC1 told us that our generators were filling their yards with diesel fumes. They were right. Some of the runs were tests at times that suited us, and some were runs we agreed to make when the grid operator asked large users to come off the grid during heat waves, which paid us and cost our neighbors. The worst was June 24, 2025, during the generator fire.

What we changed, between July 2025 and March 2026:
Tests moved to the second Tuesday of the month, 10:00 to 11:00, on half the sets at a time.
We stopped volunteering SEC1 for heat-wave demand response. NWK1, which has no homes downwind, still takes part.
Every SEC1 set has selective catalytic reduction and a particulate filter, fitted in 2025.
Both sites switched to renewable diesel in March 2026.
The exhaust stacks on sets 7 to 10, nearest the houses, were raised by 12 feet.
We meet the neighbors who want to meet us twice a year, in the conference room at SEC1. If you would like to be told about the next meeting, write to neighbors@cordgrassdata.com.
