Incident report ·
SEC1: utility outage and generator fire; Hall 2 temperatures exceeded limits
-
Post-incident report
Our report on this incident, PIR-2025-03, is published. It covers the cause of the fire, why the chiller shedding sequence let Hall 2 overheat, what we have changed and what we owe the customers affected.
-
Resolved
Both utility feeders have been stable overnight. The nine remaining generators have been inspected and load-tested this morning. We will publish a full report on this incident within thirty days.
-
Monitoring
Utility feeder 2 was restored at 17:46 and SEC1 transferred back to utility power at 18:20. Hall 2 has been within its normal range since 16:07. Generator 3 is isolated and will stay out of service until it has been inspected.
-
Update
A third chiller was restored at 15:38. Hall 2 supply air peaked at 91.4 °F at 15:42 and is now falling. Some customers in Hall 2 report equipment shutting down on high temperature. Remote hands can power equipment back on at your request; please call the NOC rather than opening a ticket.
-
Identified
At 15:12 a fire started in the exhaust section of generator 3. Our engineers shut the set down and put the fire out with portable extinguishers; the fire department attended and confirmed that it is out. No one was hurt. With generator 3 out of service, Halls 1 to 3 are on generator power with no spare set, and at 15:13 the generator controls shed two of the five chillers to protect the remaining sets. Supply air temperatures in Hall 2 are above the normal range. Hall 4 is not affected.
-
Investigating
SEC1 lost both utility feeders at 13:41 and transferred to generator power as designed. All customer loads are on generator power and normal. We are in contact with the utility, which reports wider outages in Hudson County.
