Both sites switch their generators to renewable diesel
From this month every generator at SEC1 and NWK1 runs on hydrotreated renewable diesel. What it changes for emissions, and what it does not.
Since March 1 every generator at SEC1 and NWK1 has run on hydrotreated renewable diesel, made from waste fats and used cooking oil. It is chemically close to conventional diesel, works in our engines without modification, and keeps well in storage, which matters to us more than to most users: our fuel may sit in a tank for a long time before the day it is needed.
Our supplier certifies its life-cycle carbon emissions at about 70% below conventional diesel. It also produces somewhat less particulate and nitrogen oxide at the exhaust, though most of the improvement our neighbors notice comes from the emissions controls we fitted to every SEC1 set last year.
It costs us about 14% more per gallon. Because we burn little fuel outside tests, that adds less than a tenth of a percent to the cost of a cabinet.
