SEC1’s perimeter flood barrier is complete
1,940 feet of wall and berm and seven deployable gates now surround SEC1 to 19.5 feet, a foot above our new design flood elevation.
The flood barrier around SEC1 is complete and passed its acceptance test on May 12. It runs for 1,940 feet around the site: reinforced concrete wall along Sedgebank Road and the east boundary, and an earth berm with a concrete core on the north and west, all with its top at 19.5 feet NAVD 88. That is a foot above our design flood elevation and 9.5 feet above the base flood elevation at the site.
Seven gates close the openings: aluminum stop logs at the vehicle entrances, hinged flood doors at the pedestrian and service gates, and a hydraulic swing gate on the dock road. On its first full test, the site’s own staff closed and sealed all seven in 3 hours 52 minutes. Our standard is three hours, and we expect to beat it with practice.
The barrier was the largest part of the Raise program, which also moved SEC1’s switchgear and UPS to a new electrical gallery at 21.0 feet and lifted its generators onto plinths at 20.0 feet. Halls 1 to 3 remain at 16.8 feet, now inside the barrier. We say that plainly on every page that mentions them.
