Statement on yesterday’s generator fire at SEC1
A fire in the exhaust of one generator during a utility outage was put out by our engineers within minutes. No one was hurt. Some customer equipment in Hall 2 shut down on temperature.
At 15:12 yesterday, Tuesday, June 24, a fire started in the exhaust section of one of the ten generators at SEC1, while the site was running on generator power during a utility outage in the heat wave. Our engineers shut the generator down and put the fire out with portable extinguishers within minutes, and the fire department attended and confirmed it was out. No one was hurt.
With that generator out of service, the generator controls reduced the cooling plant to protect the remaining sets, and temperatures in Hall 2 rose above our normal range for about half an hour. Some customer equipment in Hall 2 shut itself down. Hall 4 and NWK1 were not affected.
“We will publish a full report within thirty days,” said Paul Ferenczi, our chief executive. “It will cover why the fire started and why Hall 2 got as hot as it did, which is the part I care about most. Customers affected will hear from their account managers today.”
To our neighbors: the smoke you saw yesterday afternoon came from the fire, and the fumes from four and a half hours of generators in the worst heat of the year. We know what that was like downwind. We will be in touch.
